ART CLUB QU

# Co-founder

my role
upon hearing the words 'computing and creative arts' at queen's, i was absolutely thrilled in hopes of creating through a combination of my two greatest interests - visual art and technology. unfortunately for me, art classes AT QUEEN'S WERE EXCLUSIVE TO THOSE IN THE FINE ARTS PROGRAM. I WAS ABSOLUTELY devastated.

I REALIZED THAT THIS DISAPPOINTMENT WAS VERY COMMON AMONG OTHER STUDENTS WHEN I MET MY CO-FOUNDER, A THIRD YEAR HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENT. THUS, THE IDEA OF ART CLUB WAS BORN.

THOUGH THE PROCESS OF STARTING AN UNDERGRADUATE ORGANIZATION WAS EXTENSIVE AND REQUIRED thorough PREPARATION, I WAS DETERMINED TO TAKE THIS MATTER INTO MY OWN HANDS. i believe ANY STUDENT LIMITED BY MATERIALS AND A SPACE TO CREATE SHOULD BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO BEGIN THEIR ARTISTIC JOURNEY, OR CONTINUE WHERE THEY LEFT OFF.

branding
the more simple something is, the more it can be perfected. even though 'art' was such a broad term, i wanted our club to be as straight forward and easy to participate in as possible. this vision inspired me to create our phrase: "materials, a space, create."

art club's minimalism did not stop me from adding personality to our image. we are often playfully witty, humourous, and casual.

to this day, many students who have discovered art club through our social media share their appreciation for our one-of-a-kind brand.

the face of it all
with a simplistic concept in mind, i began brainstorming logo ideas. i settled upon an eisel - an item recognizable, but not as common as a palette or a paintbrush. it could stand alone or have 'art club' beside it. this ensured it had to flexibility to work around it's various uses.

i kept the colours to a soft black and off white, but used a set of standard rainbow colours as an accent where needed.

BUILDING ANTICIPATION
after finalizing our queen's university ratification, it was time to introduce art club to the student's. i knew that our simple brand needed an extra touch to help generate interest, so i decided to make our social media casual and welcoming.

after being a part of many different organizations, i had a strong understanding of formality. art club was a fun, creative space. i used this to my advantage throughout my designing process.

the concept of minimalism is marketed throughout all of art club's activity. from our slogan to our image to our events, we are dedicated to making creation easy.

ONboarding
first, we hired an outreach director to assist with our hiring process. they became an absolute asset to our system, and were shortly promoted to vice-chair.

we proceeded to outline what was needed to accomplish the success of art club; fundraising, finance, and marketing. our hiring process was a success, and we were able to hire three other motivated students with a passion for achieving our goal.
